The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA), an initiative of AGRA was established in 2021 to support sector leaders to deliver on top national priorities in African agriculture and nutrition security.

The Centre’s Advanced Leadership programme, a 16-month highly selective and collaborative learning journey, is designed for senior leaders and rising stars spearheading country level priorities across government, private sector, and civil society. Each cohort comprises of leaders from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

The programme’s third cohort of 40 delegates joins the inaugural alumni and second cohort for a hands-on unique learning experience, making their in-person debut at the recently held fifth edition of the CALA Leadership Forum from 3-5th September in Dar es Salaam, on the sidelines of the Africa Food Systems Forum (AGRF).

The third cohort, which launched in August 2023, brings together pan-African leaders with members from each focus country. The cohort boasts a wide representation across the three sectors with 60% government, 23% private sector and 17% civil society.

The cohort members will receive support to deliver on top national priorities in African agriculture and nutrition security as well as accessing unique offerings such as collaborating on Action Learning Projects, learning events, Leadership forums, online courses, game-changer case studies and more.

The third cohort now joins fellow executive leaders and rising stars on the journey as CALA continues to set the stage for African-led solutions on delivery of national priorities across the continent.

The Centre is led by AGRA in collaboration with the African Management Institute (AMI), the Centre’s lead implementer and learning partner.

About AGRA

Founded in 2006, AGRA, is an African-led African-based organization that seeks to catalyze agriculture transformation in Africa. AGRA is focused on putting smallholder farmers at the center of the continent’s growing economy by transforming agriculture from a solitary struggle to survive into farming as a business that thrives. As the sector that employs the majority of Africa’s people, nearly all of them small-scale farmers, AGRA recognizes that developing smallholder agriculture into a productive, efficient, and sustainable system is essential to ensuring food security, lifting millions out of poverty, and driving equitable growth across the continent.
